So……the $64,000 question, just how do I get medical billing employment? Especially that first client.
The fear of not being able to get business is the reason why many people fall prey to scams. I say fear because that’s exactly what it is. If you have the personality traits to be a good medical biller, chances are that sales and marketing are not really your thing.
Obtaining those first accounts is difficult, but it can be done.
There are many ways to go about getting medical billing employment. The suggestions outlined here come from my experience and the experience of other colleagues in the business.
Remember, this site offers practical and cost saving advice. You won’t find any get rich schemes here. These medical billing marketing methods take some time and patience.
Before getting started, I encourage you to read "The Strangest Secret" by Earl Nightingale. Read it every day as a reminder that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
For my best marketing tips, be sure to purchase my Medical Billing Starter Kit on How To Do Medical Billing. It is very reasonably priced and includes: sample marketing postcard, contract, and forms you can modify and use yourself.
So let’s get started:
Tip #1 Get a job in a medical office or for a medical billing service.
You’re probably saying, hey, wait a minute. I’m going into business for myself to get away from the 9-5 rat race. My response is…. you have to start somewhere and there are many advantages to going this route.
First and foremost, you gain experience on someone else's dime. Think about it. Starting a medical billing service is a lot easier if you already have some real world experience. You will never learn it all in medical billing school, despite what they tell you.
Second, you find out whether medical billing is really the right career choice for you. There’s no sense spending a lot of money on education if a medical billing career is not right for you.
Third, you have the potential of turning your employer into a client and you meet other healthcare professionals who are also potential clients. Healthcare is a word of mouth business. You have much more opportunity with a warm lead than a cold one.
Take a job as a receptionist if need be, anything to insert yourself in a medical office. You can take educational courses at the same time. More on that later.
Tip #2 Bundle medical billing with another service you perform.
I have seen several computer hardware specialists use this approach to finding medical billing employment. They specialize in computer support for medical offices and offer medical billing as well. This would also work for transcriptionists, bookkeepers, or a payroll service.
Tip #3 Join a Medical Office Managers, Medical Assistants, or Bookkeepers Group.
These groups meet regularly for educational purposes. This is a good way to connect with office staff. Hand out business cards and let people know you are looking for medical billing work.
Tip #4 Become an expert in a specialty.
Let’s say you want to specialize in dermatology. You could call a dermatology office and ask to speak to the medical biller. Offer to pay the biller to train you on everything to do with dermatology billing.
Sign up for one day courses that specialize in dermatology billing. These classes usually tell you all the ins and outs to get maximum reimbursement.
Read everything you can find about dermatology. Then create a dermatology newsletter. Call dermatology offices and ask if they would like to receive this newsletter by email or fax. Mention in your newsletter that you specialize in dermatology billing.
Tip #5 Mail brochures and place ads in medical journals.
This method will definitely yield results but it requires planning and perseverance. Whether you mail brochures or postcards, or place ads in medical journals, you have to do it consistently over a period of time in order to have any success. My ebook on How To Do Medical Billing covers low cost but effective marketing strategies.
It is my experience that doctors respond to the personal touch. I know one medical biller that sent out letters to doctors in her area. She requested their business and gave information about her personal background, that she was dedicated and honest. She was convincing and sincere. She sent these letters out repeatedly for over a year.
After several years, she is now a very successful medical billing service.
Your marketing will be more successful if you can create a “spin” to it. Why should a doctor choose you to do their medical billing? Is there something extra you can offer? Most medical billing ads promise to improve reimbursement or turnaround time.
You have to come up with something unique. Maybe you can provide extra services that your competitors don’t. Extra services could include helping the practice with its marketing in order to attract more patients and improve their bottom line. This could include patient birthday cards, specialty specific newsletters, notifications on specific illness that the physician treats, etc.
Of course, doing these extra services is more work for you, but this is what you have to expect in your early days.
So that is my list of recommendations for finding medical billing employment. For more marketing tips, purchase
